Pulsatile Tinnitus

Tinnitus MiracleWhile most tinnitus is heard only by the person suffering from it, in about 3% of the cases, the noises can be heard by another person.  This is what is called pulsatile tinnitus, or objective tinnitus.  The sounds often mirror the beating rhythm of the person’s heart, giving this form of tinnitus its name.

Although most tinnitus manifests itself as ringing or buzzing sounds, pulsatile tinnitus has a lower register of sound, sometimes described as thumping, or a low blowing noise that corresponds with the person’s breathing.  Besides the beating sounds associated with this form of tinnitus, there can also be sharp clicking sounds caused by middle ear contractions.  All of these sounds can be detected by others with the possible exception of the very lowest noises.

While most cases of pulsatile tinnitus are basically harmless, there can be a serious underlying problem that will benefit from medical attention.  Pulsatile tinnitus can be caused by vasculitis, which is an inflammation of the blood vessels.  Vasculitis can cause quite serious damage to the veins, such as weakening, scarring, or thickening.  It is easy to see how this condition could easily cause the thumping or beating often associated with pulsatile tinnitus.  While vasculitis can be treated, it can be a very serious disease, and needs immediate medical attention.

Sometimes, pulsatile tinnitus can be caused by prolonged and heavy exercise or work.  This activity can increase the flow of blood to the area of the neck and head, causing the person to notice the beating of their heart.  This form of pulsatile tinnitus is basically benign, but should be checked out by a doctor to make sure that there is not a narrowed artery or vein that is causing the tinnitus.

There are other factors that can also cause pulsatile tinnitus, and most of them warrant medical attention.  Heart murmur is one cause of this form of tinnitus, as is high blood pressure.  A long-standing infection or inflammation of the middle ear or eustachian tube can also cause the patient to experience the pulsing sound of this tinnitus.  There can even be a tumor in the middle ear that must be removed surgically.  These tumors are considered to be benign in nature, and their removal should cure tinnitus caused by them.

As can be seen, anyone who has pulsatile tinnitus should be thoroughly examined to make sure that there is no serious problem causing the beating in the ears.  Most people with this form of tinnitus will need to have a CT scan, MRI, ultrasound, or other test done to help to pinpoint what is causing the pulsatile tinnitus.

If no serious or dangerous medical condition is detected, the person with pulsatile tinnitus can proceed to other treatment.  People will usually try to have conventional medicine treat their pulsatile tinnitus. Unfortunately, the level of success achieved by conventional treatment of pulsatile tinnitus is low.   However, there are now alternative programs and treatments that may offer a solution and cure for even this form of tinnitus.  These programs are offered online, making them easily accessible, and their cost is low enough to make them affordable by everyone who needs them.
